Upper
Newport Bay Ecological Reserve Field Trip
Date: Saturday, November 10, 2007
Time: 8:00 – 11:30 am
Students will learn the ecology of upper Newport Bay by participating
in a “hands on” inventory of the fish in the bay by conducting an
otter trawl on a boat and identifying the fish; conducting a beach
seine and identifying the fish; collecting a mud sample with a coring
device and viewing the animals within and collecting water quality
data. Located at entrance to Newport Back Bay – drive just past
Newport Dunes, near Jamboree and Pacific Coast Hwy. Please bring
the handbook with you.

For both field trips, wear old clothes and
bring a note pad and pencil. Each field trip is worth a possible thirty
(30) points of extra credit. In order to get the extra credit, you must
turn in the assigned written assignment no later than the day of the final
exam.
I hope you attend these field trips. They will certainly reinforce the
material covered in Marine Science 100, and will give you a whole new
perspective of our southern California coastal intertidal environments.
