Midterm and Final Exam Review

 

A. Midterm Review. The midterm will be taken online.  No scheduled in-class review. Therefore, you are encouraged to email your instructor whenever you need his help.

 

By the time the midterm takes place, we will have covered lesson 11. The review will focus on the word usage and expressions, and grammar notes.

Lesson eight:

-          the use of classifier cá, thịt, hoa, quả

-          the use of directional prepositions: từ, về, xuống, lên, sang, ra, vào

-          the use of parallelism

Lesson nine:

-          common illnesses and diseases: cảm, cúm, suyễn, đau bụng, …

-          outdoor activities: đi thuyền, đi bơi,…

-          adverbs of frequency

-          the use of other adverbs        

-          change a direct quote into an indirect sentence

Lesson ten:

-          terms of common things

-          the use of verbs in a series

-          the use of compound adjectives:

-          brief discussion on French loanwords

-          regressive assimilation in counting

Lesson eleven:

-          place to live and brief touch on job search

-          compound nouns

-          personal information

-          filling out an application

-          comparative and superlative comparison

 

B. Review for Final Examination

The final examination will be administered in-class a week prior to the actual test. In-class review will be announced in a timely manner so that all of you will be able to schedule for it beforehand.

The final examination will comprehensive cover eight lessons – eight to fifteen – of the course. The test will include two parts:

  1. Part one: Multiple choice, the content of which may include the previous lessons and those listed below:

Lesson twelve:

-          jobs and career (classifiers and occupational terms)

-          the use of modals: định, nên, …

-          conditional clauses – real and unreal conditional statements

Lesson thirteen:

-          forms of entertainment

-          modes of transportation

-          duplicative derivatives

-          interjectional expressions

-          collective pronouns

-          the use of indefinite pronoun as appositive

Lesson fourteen:

-          holidays and Tết celebration

-          idiomatic comparison with như

-          more about modal đã

-          parallelism structure

Lesson fifteen:

-          the weather

-          terms related to seafood and products

-          the use of phải (obligatory passive particle)

-          adverbs of degrees of (un)certainty

-          brief discussion on punctuation

  1. Part two – Writing.

There will be two short essay related to the learned topics. Examinees can select one of these topics for perfect essays:

-          Tell the different between a cold and the flu and how do you feel when you have a cold or the flu.

-          The benefits of doing physical exercises.

-          Write a short essay about your experience in the job you are applying.

-          Tell about the job you are having. Do you like or not?

-          What form of entertainment do you like best?

-          What is or are the difference(s) between a movie and a book?

-          What do you do on weekends or on a long holiday?

-          Have you visited Vietnam lately? If you have, write a short essay about the trip.

-          Have you visited Vietnam? Write a short essay about your anticipation about the trip if you are going to take it.

-          What are majoring? Tell about your educational plan.
