Midterm Review

 

By the time we take this midterm examination, we might have finished lesson three and practice #65. It is advisable that we should memorize all the terms and expressions in the vocabulary of those three lessons and the preliminary part (i.e. the pronunciation guide). I use the term ‘we’ on purpose. I try to be in your shoes!

The midterm is consisted of four sections:

Section one: Pronunciation and spelling (10 pts)

     There will be 10 questions closely related to the consonant letters and their sounds. To successfully pass this part, please review the preliminary part thoroughly.

Section two:  Vocabulary. There are three parts: A, B and C.

        Part A: Select an English term/phrase that BEST FITS its Vietnamese equivalent (10 pts).

        For example: người Úc  a. Austria   b. Australia   c. Austrian        d. Australian   e. autralian

The correct answer to this question is C – Australian. E is not selected because it is not    capitalized.

        Part B: Select the word that DOES NOT belong to the group (20 pts):

        For example: a. tôi  b. họ   c. chúng nó   d. tên   e. các ông

The correct answer to this question is D – tên. It is a common noun; others are pronouns.

        Part C: Select the BES expressions that describe the following numbers (10pts):

        For example:  25: 

             a. hai năm  b. hai mười lăm   c. hai mươi lăm    d. hâm lăm     e. hai mươi năm.

The correct answer is C – hai mươi lăm. Though D might be correct but it should not be selected because it is informal expression, just like don’t for DO NOT.

Section three: Word usage and grammar structure: This section also consists of three parts – A, B, and C.

        Part A: Select among the clues for your BEST answer (10 points)

        For example: That man is from Mexico.

        a. Tiếng ông ấy là Mễ.               b. Tiếng mẹ ông ấy là Mễ.                c. Ông ấy từ Mễ.

        d. Ông ấy là người Mễ.              e. Ông ấy đến từ Mễ.

The correct answer to this question quesiton is D – Ông ấy là người Mễ. Please do not translate word by word. You might be wrong if you do so!

        Part B: Read the questions carefully and select the clues for your BEST answers (10 pts)

        For example: Tom và Anh __________ của trường đại học Rice bên Texas

        a. học sinh         b. sinh viên     c. học viên       d. đôi bạn       e. hai người Việt Nam

The correct answer is B – sinh viên.

        Part C: Select the one item – a, b, c, d. or e. and mark your answer (10 pts)

        For example: Chúng tôi __________ cô ta _________ Bé Tý.

        a. gọi                  b. kêu, là    c. gọi, là       d. gọi, làm   e. gọi là, cô

The correct answer to this question is C – Chúng tôi     gọi    cô ta     là     Bé Tý.

Section four: Listening. This section has two parts: A and B.

       Part A has five questions: Listen to the speaker carefully and select the correspondent answer:

       For example: You will hear: một trăm sáu mươi lăm

       a. 100, 65             b. 160 năm  c. 165             d. 1615           e. 155

       Part B: Listen to the passage and answer the True/False Questions.

Final Review

 

Hi friends,

Happy to see you again. This time we are going to do a little hard work for the final. As all you of probably have known that the more we learn the more we know. The final, therefore, is double in length in the time frame of two hours. Don’t feel bad. That proves that we have made a big progress! Unfortunately, the preview is as little as a half of the previous one for the midterm. It is so contradictory!

Well, let’s take a brief look at what we are supposed to do. The final is comprehensive; it is consisted of three main parts.

 

Part one has five types of tasks:

1. Filling the blanks. Please preview the alphabet, other features related to the language as mentioned in the midterm

2. Adding tonal marks to complete the paragraph, of course. This is the most crucial part.

3. Answering questions related to personal information. For instance: anh/chị ở đâu? nhà số mấy, anh/chị là con thứ mấy trong gia đình?

4. Matching the Vietnamese terms with their English equivalents, mainly definitions: vui vẻ ‘cười  nói thoải mái (similing, laughing and talking friendly, happily)

5. Cloze test. Lớp này ________________ khó. a. khó              b. dễ    c. thì    d. thì là

 

Part two is about reading comprehension. We have to read a passage and answer questions related to the reading.

Part three is simply a short paragrahy about your impression of the class. The paragraph should be written in Vietnamese.
