Required Project Paper (28 Possible Points)

You must submit one "Critical Essay Writing" for this course. Issues to pick from  are listed on the next page. The paper should be typed and double spaced and 6-8  pages in length. You will receive a postcard with your grade on your position paper, unless was  submitted at the time of the final review by which time such feedback would be  useless. You may only send your paper the following ways, fax (714-241-6287), mail or hand deliver to the DISTANCE LEARNING DEPARTMENT. GENERAL HINTS: DO: staple pages together. put your name on the paper itself, not just the envelope. mark it as "Project". keep a copy of your paper in case it gets lost in the mail. DON'T: put it into any kind of a folder, which can't be returned anyway. NOTE: There will be a 5 point penalty if this required paper is turned in after the due date

Critical Essay Writing Assignment (6-8 pages)

Select one of the following issues and write a 6 - 8 page paper using the following format: Part I: Write a short essay taking one side or the other on the issue you select. Part II: Write a critical analysis in reply to your essay in Part I (as though you were a fair opponent attacking your argument). Pay close attention to pseudo reasoning/fallacies. Part II: Rewrite your original essay, (Part I), taking into account your own criticism in Part II. The three part paper should not exceed 6 - 8 pages in length. Write a paper on: Whether all college students should be required to take at least basic introductory courses in math, science, and a foreign language. Whether the lecture method is a good way to teach certain college courses - specify which kinds of courses you're talking about. Whether we should have a military draft in peacetime. Whether the workers at the bottom of the economic ladder are underpaid. Whether we should have sex education in high school. Whether we should raise (lower) the legal drinking age - should convicted drunk drivers lose their driver's licenses. Whether marijuana should be legalized. Are there fair ways to make American industry more competitive with foreign industry? Whether we should require that every adult be tested for AIDS. Are income tax laws in the U.S. fair? Whether major league baseball and football teams should be owned by the cities they represent? Whether animals should be used in the testing of pharmaceuticals and consumer products. Whether the death penalty can be applied fairly.
