Welcome From the Instructor

Dear Student:

Welcome to the online version of Introductory Marketing at Coastline College. By taking this course, it represents you have an interest in how individuals, businesses, and products are marketed to maximize efficiency in providing positive information to a given segment of the population. I will be your instructor for this course who will guide you through the material presented helping you to comprehend the various concepts and ideas that are utilized in the marketing process.

To acquaint you with my background, my education includes a B.A. from Cal State University, Fullerton with a major in Radio-TV-Film and a minor in Business specializing in marketing. I also hold a Master’s Degree in Education from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. In addition, I have a lifetime California Community College Credential in both Business and Communications subject matter.

I have experienced many different facets of broadcasting and retail ventures throughout my life. I began a business career working for the The Broadway Department Stores. During my six years there, I went from managing several store departments to eventually working as a buyer for women’s shoes representing all 41 stores at that time.

Upon leaving The Broadway, I worked for Ohrbach’s as a Floor Manager, and then embarked on a career in broadcasting. My radio experiences have included advertising sales, marketing, station management, and on-air work for five different stations.

With a continued desire to own a business, I set out to build and operate a watch sales and service facility in Irvine. During the seven years in that business, the retail location acquired a local, national, and global clientele of customers servicing watches as a worldwide authorized service center for Casio, Citizen, Lorus, and Timex watches.

In addition to the watch business, I became a franchisee of Heidi’s Frozen Yogurt Stores, eventually opening three with an employee base of 50 people. After successfully owning and operating these businesses, I sold them and reentered the broadcasting industry working in television production sound. Among the shows associated with for the past 15 years include Golden Girls, Empty Nest, Mad About You, Will & Grace, Just Shoot Me, The Norm Show, Happy Family, What I Like About You. In 1994, I received an Emmy® Award for Best Sitcom Sound on Mad About You.

In addition to working in the entertainment industry, I have enjoyed a part-time career teaching both business and broadcasting courses at various colleges in Orange County. For the past several years, I have limited my teaching to Coastline, Orange Coast College, and Cal State University, Fullerton.

Teaching is a passion, and it is very rewarding to see students succeed in their chosen fields of study. Many students who take this course have a goal of owning their own business. I certainly relate to that desire having owned and operated several retail businesses. During this course, I bring personal experiences and discuss how various marketing concepts are important to implement in any business venture.

Upon completing this course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the principles, concepts, and tools utilized to practice marketing. My goal is to impart business knowledge and experiences to students who have a passion to succeed in their chosen field of study. I encourage students to communicate as the need arises to achieve the goals needed to succeed in this course.

I look forward to working with you during the semester. You may contact me by email at your convenience, or by telephone during office hours. Email is checked regularly and you should receive a reply within 48 hours. If you leave a voice-mail, be sure to identify yourself stating the nature of your question, and leave a clearly spoken return phone number. To help alleviate any miscommunication, repeat your phone number before hanging up. I will attempt to return a call once, so make sure your answering machine or voice-mail system is set up to take a call. You may also post questions on the bulletin board. This is an excellent venue to ask generic questions. Good luck with your studies.

Sincerely,
John Hart
